1. Obstructed Airway

apnea - Oakland Orthodontist | Orthodontic Care Center

While we sleep, gravity and muscle relaxation allows the tongue and surrounding soft tissue to fall back into the throat area, collapsing the airway and obstructing the air flow.

2. SomnoDent Device

Custom-fit by a dentist, SomnoDent® oral devices treat OSA by moving the lower jaw slightly forward. This forward movement keeps the airway open, preventing apneas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oakland Orthodontist | Orthodontic Care Center

“How much does a SomnoDent oral device cost?”

A: Depends on your medical insurance, if your dentist is in-network, if you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, failed CPAP therapy, and the fees of the office you go to. You will need to speak directly with a SomnoDent Sleep Dentist near you to determine cost and coverage of your health plan for oral appliance therapy.

What if it doesn’t work for me?”

A: Even with products such as SomnoDent with proven clinical efficacy, not every treatment will work for every patient. If you have questions or concerns about whether SomnoDent has improved your condition, you should return to your medical or dental provider to discuss your options.

“Is it covered by insurance?”

A: SomnoDent oral devices will most likely not be covered by your dental insurance but are covered by many health insurance plans as a medical device to treat sleep apnea. Please contact your health insurance provider for information relative to your specific case. Many providers require a sleep apnea diagnosis.

“Are there side effects?”

A: Most of the side effects or using COATTM are considered minor and typically subside after the first week or two. The three primary side effcts are tooth discomfort, TMJ (jaw joint) or muscular discomfort, and tooth movement or bite changes. Your SomnoDent provider should provider you with morning exercises and repositioning. Although other minor complications are possible, like salivation changes and dry lips.
